Terms of Service
Effective October 13, 2026
1. The agreement
These terms are between you and Gruby (“we”). By using the Gruby app or gruby.app you agree to them and to our Privacy Policy. If you downloaded the app from the App Store, Apple’s standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies; where the two differ, these terms govern your relationship with us.
2. What Gruby does
Gruby suggests dinners from what you tell it is in your kitchen and from the food rules you enter for the people at your table. It can plan several nights, build a shopping list, guide you through cooking, and keep track of food you used before it went off. You decide what to cook and what to serve.
3. Food safety: please read this
Gruby’s suggestions are based on what you enter and on an ingredient database reviewed by people. Ingredients still vary by brand and batch, labels change, and cross-contact happens in any kitchen. Gruby is not medical advice and cannot guarantee that any dish is free of any allergen or suitable for any condition. Always check labels, follow the advice of your doctor or dietitian, and use your own judgement, especially for allergies and celiac disease. You are responsible for what you cook and serve.
4. Your account
You can use Gruby without an account. If you sign in, give us accurate details, keep your sign-in to yourself, and tell us if you think someone else has used it. You must be at least 13 to have an account.
5. Your household
You can invite up to five other people to share your table. Everyone in a household sees its kitchen, list, people, meals and recipes, so only invite people you want to share those with. The owner of a household can remove members. A Gruby Plus subscription covers everyone in the subscriber’s household for as long as they are in it.
6. Gruby Plus
Gruby Plus is a subscription sold through Apple, at the prices shown in the app.
The yearly plan includes a free trial for new subscribers. When the trial ends you are charged for the year unless you cancel at least 24 hours before it ends. We remind you two days before.
Subscriptions renew automatically unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. You cancel, change or restore a subscription in your Apple ID settings, not in Gruby.
Refunds are handled by Apple under Apple’s policies.
What Plus includes may change over time. If we remove something that matters, we tell you before your next renewal.
The free version of Gruby and its limits are described in the app. Checking a dinner against everyone’s food rules is never paid for.
7. Your recipes and content
Recipes you write or import are yours. You give us permission to store them, sync them and show them to you and your household, which is all we do with them. Only import recipes you have the right to use for your own cooking. We do not publish your recipes to anyone outside your household unless you share one with everyone.
8. Sharing recipes with everyone
You can share a recipe you wrote yourself with everyone who uses Gruby. Share only your own recipes, never one imported from a website or copied from a book or another person. When you share, your first name, your face, the recipe and its photo become public. You give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to store and show them in Gruby while they are shared. People who cook your recipe save their own copy, which stays with them after you stop sharing.
Zero tolerance: there is no place on Gruby for objectionable content or abusive users. Do not share anything hateful, sexual, violent or harassing, anything unsafe to eat, spam, or anything that is not food. Shared text is checked automatically, and a recipe that fails the check is not shared.
Reporting: anyone signed in can report a shared recipe. A recipe reported by three people is hidden straight away. We review reported content within 24 hours, remove anything that breaks these terms, and remove users who post it.
Blocking: you can block a cook, and their recipes will not appear for you again. You can unblock them in Settings.
Deleting: you can stop sharing a recipe at any time, and it disappears from Gruby at once.
To report something urgent, email support@gruby.app.
9. Selling recipes
You can sell a recipe you share for one of the prices Gruby offers. Sharing for free stays the default. To sell, you must be at least 18, live in a country Gruby pays out to (the United States to begin with), and set up payouts with Stripe.
Only sell recipes you wrote yourself and have every right to sell. Never sell a recipe copied from a book, a website, a package or another person, even if you changed it a little. You are responsible for your recipe, its photo and what it says about allergens and safety.
Your first paid recipe is checked by a person before anyone can buy it, usually within 24 hours. After that, your paid recipes are shared the same way as free ones, with the same checks, reports and rules. Selling does not change what is allowed: everything under Sharing recipes with everyone and Acceptable use applies.
People buy recipes through Apple. Apple keeps its commission (currently 15% under Apple’s Small Business Program, or 30% if that changes). Gruby keeps 10% of what Apple pays us. You earn the rest. Your share is worked out from the United States price of the tier you chose, whatever country the buyer is in, and is shown for every sale under Earnings.
Earnings become available 60 days after each sale, once Apple has paid us and most refunds have come in. We pay available earnings once a month, on or soon after the 1st, by transfer to your Stripe account, when they add up to at least $10. Smaller amounts carry over to the next month. Stripe’s terms apply to your Stripe account and how Stripe pays your bank.
Taxes on your earnings are your responsibility. Stripe collects your tax details and issues tax forms such as a 1099 where the law requires it.
If a buyer gets a refund from Apple, the earning for that sale is reversed. If it was already paid to you, it is taken from your future earnings, and your balance may show less than zero until it is.
We may remove a listing, stop you selling, and withhold or take back earnings for any sale that is refunded, fraudulent, or breaks these terms, including selling a recipe that is not yours. If we close your account for breaking these terms, earnings not yet paid may be forfeited where the law allows. We tell you why unless the law prevents it.
You can make a recipe free again or stop sharing it at any time. Households that already bought it keep it after you stop sharing it, unless we removed it.
10. Buying recipes
Some cooks sell their recipes. Before you buy, Gruby shows the dish, its ingredients and whether it is safe for everyone at your table under the food rules you entered; the amounts and steps unlock when you buy.
Recipes are bought through Apple, at the price shown in the app, with the payment method on your Apple ID. Each purchase unlocks one recipe.
A recipe you buy is unlocked for your whole household, on every device, for as long as it is in Gruby. Nothing needs restoring. If you leave the household, the recipe stays with it.
Refunds are handled by Apple under Apple’s policies; ask Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com. A refunded recipe locks again.
Recipes are written by the cooks who sell them, not by Gruby. The food safety section above applies to them as to every dish: check labels and use your own judgement. If a recipe is not what it says, report it.
If we remove a recipe for breaking these terms, it is no longer available, including to people who bought it, and you can ask Apple for a refund.
11. Our content
The app, its catalog of dishes, the ingredient database and the Gruby name and mark belong to us or to the people who license them to us. Dish photos come from Wikimedia Commons under their own licences and are credited in the app. You may use all of it for your own personal, non-commercial cooking. You may not copy the catalog or database, scrape the service, or reverse-engineer the app, except where the law allows it regardless of these terms.
12. Acceptable use
Use Gruby lawfully and decently: do not try to get into households you were not invited to, interfere with the service, access it with automated tools, or use it to harm anyone.
13. Ending things
You can delete your account at any time in Settings. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, after telling you why unless the law prevents it. Sections about food safety, content, disclaimers and liability continue to apply afterwards.
14. Disclaimers and liability
Gruby is provided as it is, without promises that it will be uninterrupted or error-free. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, and our total liability to you for anything arising from Gruby is limited to what you paid us in the twelve months before the claim, or, for a cook, the earnings we owe you. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence.
15. Changes to these terms
If we change these terms in a way that matters, the app tells you and the date at the top moves. Continuing to use Gruby after that means you accept the new terms.
16. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Illinois, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules, and disputes are heard in the courts of Illinois. If you live somewhere whose law gives you rights these terms cannot take away, you keep them.
